While it may be a little late to start 2019 with a resolution, that doesn鈥檛 mean it鈥檚 too late to make a change.

For some, 2019 may be the perfect opportunity to charge ahead and improve their career.

Venture capitalist Arlene Dickinson dropped by CTV鈥檚 Your Morning on Monday, to share her top five tips to 鈥渨in鈥 at your work life in 2019.

1. Know your worth

Dickinson鈥檚 first tip is to recognize what you are worth, as a worker.

This can be of particular concern, for instance, among those returning to the workforce after being a stay-at-home parent, with the learning they鈥檝e acquired at home being seen as less valuable than workplace experience.

鈥淚t鈥檚 actually very valuable information that you can take into the workforce,鈥 Dickinson says.

2. Create a core network

Dickinson says that one of the most crucial moves to make in 2019 is to build a network of trusted confidants and advisors.

While reaching out to people with a higher profile at work can never hurt, it鈥檚 more important to find people that you have instant chemistry with and can trust.

鈥淚t鈥檚 one thing to exchange cards at an event, it鈥檚 another thing to really connect with somebody and feel they can help support you,鈥 she said.

3. Set milestones and work towards them

One issue entrepreneurs face is handling many diverse aspects of a business all at once. The way to solve that, Dickinson says, is setting goals and working towards them.

鈥淪ometimes it鈥檚 incremental,鈥 she said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 small steps and it鈥檚 constantly believing that you鈥檙e moving forward.鈥

She says that it鈥檚 equally important to celebrate your achievements, as those minor 鈥渨ins鈥 can provide the motivation to push forward in the future.

And if you fail to follow through on a goal, Dickinson says not to worry.

鈥淗ey that鈥檚 ok,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e all fail at some point.鈥

4. Slow down

Dickinson says that when you鈥檙e constantly on the go, slowing down to give yourself context is of utmost importance.

Taking a break can give you the chance to gain new perspectives on challenges, goals, and life itself.

鈥淗ow do you know if you鈥檙e really winning and getting ahead if you鈥檙e not just savouring the moment, taking it easy once in a while and just thinking instead of doing?鈥 Dickinson asks.

5. Mute the noise

Dickinson鈥檚 final tip is to 鈥渕ute the noise,鈥 or create priorities that will help you achieve your goals.

While it may sound a tad mercenary, Dickinson says that the things that are constantly pulling at your attention, like family, friends, and personal obligations can sometimes take a back seat as you clarify your goals.

While it鈥檚 important not to shut off the rest of the world entirely, Dickinson says it鈥檚 worth it to work at your own needs ahead of others from time to time.

鈥淚f you鈥檙e personally satisfied, you鈥檒l satisfy everyone else,鈥 she says.
