CAPE SABLE ISLAND, N.S. -- Divers with the RCMP and the Canadian Coast Guard are searching for a sailboat after it went down off of Cape Sable Island, near Nova Scotia.

Authorities say someone in the community reported Friday morning that the single-mast sailboat had gone missing after arriving the previous night.

Barrington RCMP Sgt. MaryJo Delcuo says the stern of the boat was still visible when emergency crews arrived, but it disappeared in front of them.

She says the vessel, estimated to be about 12 metres long, had been abandoned and no one was on board when it went under.

Police didn't receive a distress call from the boat.

Investigators hope that today's search of the water and shoreline near Daniels Head Wharf will turn up more information about who the boat belongs to and why it sank.
