REGINA - Hundreds of school children waved flags as Gov. Gen. David Johnston visited Regina as part of his first tour of Saskatchewan.

There was a 21-gun salute in front of the legislature before Johnston spoke at the nearby Saskatchewan War Memorial, where he paid tribute to those who have served Canada.

Johnston said every soldier has a story and such events are a good way to pass those stories to the next generation.

Seventy-three-year-old Lorne Harasen, whose father served in the Second World War, talked briefly with Johnston and called him the "smiling governor general."

Harasen said Johnston joked that he has to smile or his wife pokes him.

Inside the legislature, Premier Brad Wall presented the Governor General and his wife with two Saskatchewan Roughriders jerseys.
