Several reality TV stars rallied to defend Kim Kardashian West on social media Monday, after word spread that she had been robbed at gunpoint at her residence in Paris.

Masked, armed thieves dressed as police reportedly stole more than US$10 million in jewelry from Kardashian West’s hotel room, leaving her handcuffed in the bathroom but otherwise unharmed.

A spokesperson for the reality star confirmed the incident Monday.

Her husband, Kanye West, halted a performance the same night upon learning of the robbery.

Social media erupted with a mix of support and derision after news of the attack broke. A number of mean-spirited tweeters said they would shed no tears for the wealthy celeb's loss, with many cracking jokes that the social media maven should have recorded the whole thing for her online audience.

Despite the jokes, an overwhelming number of Twitter users spoke up to defend Kardashian West, with most pointing out that the robbery could have ended violently. Chrissy Teigen put out several tweets in defence of her friend, even going so far as to argue with one user who said he didn't "feel sorry" for someone who owns millions of dollars' worth of jewelry.

"No one is begging you for sympathy," , adding in a separate tweet that the public would "make a meme of our dead bodies to get retweets."

Former reality star Spencer Pratt went on a Twitter rant of his own, though it wasn't nearly as coherent. "Messing with Kim is attack on America!" he tweeted. "If French thieves stole my #iphone7plus it would be WAR."

Other, more contemporary celebrities also offered their sympathy and support for Kardashian West.
