Eddie Murphy is reflecting on some of the 鈥渃heap shots鈥 he feels he鈥檚 taken over the years.

The Oscar-nominated actor and comedian 鈥 whose new film, 鈥淏everly Hills Cop: Axel F鈥 hits Netflix July 3 鈥 was asked in an interview with the New York Times if he feels he鈥檚 received unfair treatment from the press and his peers over the years.

鈥淏ack in the old days, they used to be relentless on me, and a lot of it was racist stuff,鈥 Murphy said.

After mentioning how it 鈥渨as a whole different world鈥 when he was coming up in the 1980s, Murphy brought up an instance 鈥渨hen David Spade said that s-鈥搕 about my career on 鈥楽NL.鈥欌

The segment in question, from a December 1995 episode in which Spade did a year-in-review during 鈥淗ollywood Minute,鈥 included a picture of Murphy on which Spade commented, 鈥淟ook children, it鈥檚 a falling star. Make a wish.鈥 Murphy told the Times the joke came after his film, 鈥淰ampire in Brooklyn,鈥 had flopped at the box office.

鈥淚t was like: 鈥榊o, it鈥檚 in-house! I鈥檓 one of the family, and you鈥檙e f-鈥搆ing with me like that?鈥 It hurt my feelings like that,鈥 Murphy said.

He rose to stardom on 鈥淪NL鈥 as part of the core cast between 1980 and 1984, and is often cited as the reason the show was at one point saved from going off the air.

鈥淭he producers thought it was OK to say that. All the people that have been on that show, you鈥檝e never heard nobody make no joke about anybody鈥檚 career. Most people that get off that show, they don鈥檛 go on and have these amazing careers. It was personal,鈥 Murphy later added. 鈥淚t was like, 鈥榊o, how could you do that?鈥 My career? Really? A joke about my career? So I thought that was a cheap shot. And it was kind of, I thought 鈥 I felt it was racist.鈥

Spade later wrote about receiving a phone call from an upset Murphy after the bit and feeling horrible about his 鈥渟tupid joke.鈥

鈥淚鈥檝e come to see Eddie鈥檚 point on this one, 鈥 Spade wrote. 鈥淓verybody in showbiz wants people to like them. That鈥檚 how you get fans. But when you get reamed in a sketch or online or however, that s鈥攖 staaaangs. And it can add up quickly.鈥

Murphy has mostly stayed away from the long-running NBC sketch show over the years, though he appeared briefly in the 鈥淪NL鈥 40th anniversary special in 2015 and returned as a host to much fanfare in 2019.

鈥淚n the long run it鈥檚 all good, worked out great. I鈥檓 cool with David Spade, I鈥檓 cool with Lorne Michaels. I went back to SNL,鈥 Murphy said this week. 鈥淚t鈥檚 all love鈥 but I had a couple of cheap shots!鈥
