Rapper Jay-Z has admitted to infidelity in his marriage to Beyonce, in a revealing interview with the New York Times about his personal struggles.

The award-winning singer and producer, who has three children with his equally successful partner, said the couple used their music to work through their issues. Jay-Z latest album, 4:44, alludes to his infidelity, as do several songs on Beyonce鈥檚 2016 album 鈥淟emonade.鈥

鈥淲e were using our art almost like a therapy session,鈥 he told the . He said they initially tried to write an album together, but Beyonce鈥檚 music was 鈥渇urther along鈥 so they kept their work separate.

Speaking about his own personal pains, Jay-Z said he went into 鈥渟urvival mode.

鈥淎nd when you go into survival mode what happen? You shut down all emotions. So even with women, you gonna shut down emotionally, so you can鈥檛 connect.鈥

He added: 鈥淚n my case, like it鈥檚, it鈥檚 deep. And then all the things happen from there. Infidelity鈥︹

Rumours about the couple鈥檚 marital problems have swirled for years. They only intensified with the release of 鈥淟emonade,鈥 in which Beyonce sings: 鈥淗e only want me when I鈥檓 not there, he better call Becky with the good hair.鈥

Jay-Z added that he was 鈥減roud of the music she made,鈥 and that Beyonce was 鈥減roud of the art I released.鈥

He cited the high number of divorces in the interview, saying that most people 鈥渃an鈥檛 see themselves.

鈥淭he hardest thing is seeing pain on someone鈥檚 face that you caused, and then have to deal with yourself.鈥
