Before enjoying "Star Wars 7" and the next James Bond movie "Spectre" later this year, movie fans are in for an exciting and eclectic selection at theaters this spring, including several highly anticipated releases.

The days are lengthening, the weather is warming up, and North American theaters are gearing up for the premieres of several blockbusters.

The young-adult sci-fi dystopia trend will return to the silver screen on March 20 with the opening of "Insurgent," the sequel to the 2014 movie "Divergent."

The hotly awaited action film "Furious 7" will arrive a few weeks later, on April 3. Jason Statham, Kurt Russell and Tony Jaa join "Fast & Furious" regulars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and the late Paul Walker, who died before filming was completed.

Superhero fans are counting down to May 1, when Marvel's "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" hits theaters. Like the previous Avengers film, the sequel is directed by Joss Whedon.

The post-apocalyptic action movie "Mad Max: Fury Road" with Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron opens May 15, followed by another highly anticipated action movie, "Jurassic World," on June 10.

Finally, younger movie fans can look forward to the release of the latest Disney-Pixar movie, "Inside Out" on June 19.

Actors behind the camera

A few actors known for their on-screen performances will premiere their feature directing debuts this season. From April 10, moviegoers can check out Ryan Gosling's "Lost River," a fantasy thriller with Eva Mendes, Saoirse Ronan and Christina Hendricks. Russell Crowe's feature debut "The Water Diviner," a World War I drama in which he stars opposite Olga Kurylenko and Jai Courtney, will open on April 24.

Stars in front of the camera

George Clooney co-stars with former "House MD" star Hugh Laurie in "Tomorrowland," a sci-fi adventure movie due in theaters on May 22.

Set to open on April 17, "Child 44" is a Soviet-era thriller with Gary Oldman, Tom Hardy, Joel Kinnaman, Noomi Rapace and Vincent Cassel. Meanwhile Jason Statham, Jude Law and Melissa McCarthy will grace the screen in Paul Feig's comedy "Spy," due for release on June 5.
