EDMONTON - An Alberta town will delay the planned disinterment of a slain Mountie for two weeks to give his relatives time to resolve an emotional dispute over whether his remains should be moved to the national RCMP cemetery in Regina.

Const. Leo Johnston was one of four RCMP who were gunned down in the 2005 Mayerthorpe massacre.

His widow, Kelly Johnston, planned to have his remains moved on Wednesday from his hometown in Lac La Biche, Alta.

The dead Mountie's mother, Grace Johnston, has been tearfully fighting the plan, saying her boy should stay in Alberta.

Lac La Biche Mayor Thomas Lett says the town, which owns the cemetery where the constable is buried now, has the power to impose the delay.

Lett says lawyers representing the families and the town are working to settle the dispute and he hopes the matter doesn't end up in court.
