A new study by the University of British Columbia has found that facial expressions aren鈥檛 the only source of information for social and public perception 鈥 tilting your head down and lowering your chin by just 10 degrees makes you appear more dominant.

鈥淲e show that tilting one鈥檚 head downward systematically changes the way the face is perceived,鈥 said researchers Zachary Witkower and Jessica Tracy in a press release. 鈥淎 neutral face 鈥 a face with no muscle movement or facial expression 鈥 appears to be more dominant when the head is tilted down.鈥

The effect is achieved by the 鈥渁rtificial appearance of lowered and V-shaped eyebrows鈥 which 鈥渆licit perceptions of aggression, intimidation and dominance.鈥

The study had 101 participants look at three avatars with the same neutral expression, one with head tilted down 10 degrees, one looking straight on, and one with head tilted up 10 degrees.

The participants would 鈥榡udge the dominance鈥 of each avatar image by rating them using statements like 鈥渢his person would enjoy having control over others,鈥 the release said.

Results shows that study participants rated the avatars with a downward head tilt as more dominant than the other two positions.

A secondary online study had 570 participants rating images of actual people, and showed the same results.

Further tests revealed that they key to the dominant effect was due to the angle of the eyebrows, 鈥渋n other words, tilting the head downward can have the same effect on social perceptions as does lowering one鈥檚 eyebrows.鈥

The researchers plan to investigate the head tilts influence on social perception as 鈥減eople often display certain movements or expressions during their everyday interactions鈥ur research suggests that we may also want to consider how [we] hold their head during these interactions,鈥 said Witkower and Tracy.

鈥淪ubtle head movements can dramatically change the meaning of otherwise innocuous facial expressions.鈥
