Retired Canadian wrestler Bret "The Hitman" Hart says he is gearing up for his "toughest battle" ever: facing prostate cancer.

Hart announced the diagnosis on Instagram on Monday, alongside a photo of him and his grandchildren.

"I'm a survivor of many hard battles," the WWE hall of famer wrote in a message accompanying the photo. "I now face my toughest battle. With hesitation and fear, I openly declare myself in my fight against prostate cancer."

Hart said he will undergo surgery that he hopes will help clear him of the disease.

In the lengthy online message, Hart also looked back on his 2002 stroke and reflected on his love for his wife, children and grandchildren.

"Love is my weapon and I've got much of it around me all the time, for which I'm truly blessed and grateful," he wrote.

Hart also pledged to be a leader and a voice for others experiencing prostate cancer.

"My fans have always looked upon me as a hero," he wrote. "And I've always done my best to live up to that in and out of the ring."
